THE DIVINE COMEDY, 1960-1964
The “DIVINE COMEDY” was written by Dante Alighieri (1265-1321) and completed in the year of his death. It consists of 100 cantos describing Dante’s journey through the afterlife, guided by Vergil through Hell and Purgatory, and by Beatrice through Paradise. To celebrate the 700th anniversary of Dante’s birth, Salvador Dali was commissioned by the Italian government to create illustrations for a special edition of the "Divine Comedy". The first edition of the book faced complications and was later published in France, 1960-64. In this gallery, we offer rare woodcut engravings from the “Divine Comedy”. These engravings, individually pencil-signed by Salvador Dali and the publisher Jean Estrade, come from a complete edition of the book we acquired. They are in excellent condition and have never been framed.
